In malls across this great land of ours, the hunt is on. Parents hunt for the hottest toys, children sit on Santa's lap, and weary shoppers rest on benches, satisfied to be seated finally but also wondering how on Earth they're going to buy everything they need to buy before Dec. 25. They rush frantically. Browse, shop, order, receive, wrap, give, pay bills, eat, eat, eat, receive, give, buy... Tonight, a reminder about Christmas, and its purpose. Christmas is jokes shared among family members. Christmas is having a baby sleep in your arms. It's remembering happy times in life that satisfied you and made you feel worth. It's conversations with friends in a coffee house and joking about marching drill. It's discussing family and friendship while driving along the Detroit River, looking at houses decorated for the holidays, and noticing how the lights on the Ambassador Bridge look remarkably Christmas-like this time of year. Christmas is a discussion on personal beliefs and happiness over dessert at Denny's around midnight. Christmas is understanding that the people around you love you more than you could ever imagine. On the first Christmas, Jesus was born as a human to help improve the world. On THIS Christmas, Jesus continues to live in people I encounter every day, who improve my world and everyone around them -- at Denny's, on Grosse Ile, or sitting around the table at a little coffeehouse in Downtown Wyandotte. And that's the best gift of all.
